Unseasonal climatic conditions, drought in many areas and poor water service delivery have left many industries and businesses turning towards alternate water sources. Through the borehole drilling process, commerce and private properties can obtain a degree of self-sufficiency that will save money in the long run and avoid the price increases levied by municipalities.
At Aqua Borehole Solutions our full turnkey service has provided the commercial, corporate and domestic sectors with long-term sustainable solutions with the added benefit of increasing property values.
A Constant Supply of Water
Business and property owners that rely on a steady supply of water can depend on Aqua Borehole Solutions’ borehole drilling process to provide a quality source of water all year round. Although the borehole drilling process generally follows the same steps, we take into account that each project may have specific requirements. To understand the numerous benefits that a borehole presents, we would like to walk you through the drilling process.
- Surveys
The first step is to have a hydrogeologist visit the site and assess the availability of water. Hydrogeologists use their knowledge of the local geology and hydrology to determine the best location for the borehole and the most likely depth to reach an aquifer. It’s important to have the geophysical properties, such as soil assessed as this determines the method of drilling and equipment that we will use.
- Drilling
After the necessary surveys have been completed and the site has been mapped and planned, we will proceed with the borehole drilling process in line with the recommendations received from the hydrogeologist.
- Testing
The next step is to install a test pump and conduct yield tests. A series of factors need to be considered before we can complete the borehole installation such as the water level, rate of the water flow and the drawdown. These tests need to determine how the drilled borehole will impact the underground water levels in the area and if measures are needed to control the changes. This information will allow us to ensure that the correct pumping system is installed.
- Completion of the borehole drilling process
Once there is sufficient drawdown, we will secure the structure and install the necessary pump and pipework in the borehole and if required, design and install a filtration system to your specifications.
How Much Space Does a Borehole Need?
There is a common misconception that boreholes require large amounts of space, but the diameter of the borehole itself is approximately 0.15 metres and 0.45 metres. As a vertical shaft needs to be drilled, the depth tends to be larger than the width. The primary reason for a borehole is to access an underground water source and can reach depths of up to 200 metres or more. We would, however, like to caution you that the construction work may take up a lot of space including gaining access to the site.
- Residential boreholes are designed to fit driveways and gardens and aquifers are normally intersected at a depth between 50 and 70 metres.
- Commercial boreholes may be slightly wider than their domestic counterparts and are drilled at a depth of about 100 metres.
Aqua Borehole Solutions would like to emphasise that these vertical depths and horizontal widths can vary depending on the geology of the site and that drilling is determined on a case-to-case basis.
