The Aqua Boreholes experts answer some of the most-asked questions about boreholes, filtration systems and solar installations:
Why do I need a filtration system if my water comes from a natural source?
Some assume that tapping into a groundwater supply means that the water can be used instantly. Unfortunately, this is not the case, especially if you are using it for human and animal consumption. Even though groundwater contains minerals, metals, and salts that are necessary for our health, high concentrations thereof can be detrimental. The water may also contain bacteria and viruses that are extremely harmful. We send a sample of the water to a certified laboratory for analysis and based on your intended water use and the report, recommend a filtration system that best suits your requirements.
How often should I have my borehole water tested?
If your water is being used for greywater or irrigation, we suggest that it is tested at least once a year. If your borehole is your main water supply, which includes consumption, it needs to be tested seasonally, which we will gladly assist you with. We test your water at the tap and source as it assists us in evaluating the effectiveness of your filtration system and identifying any changes in the quality of the groundwater source.
Can my filter system be installed anywhere on my property?
Ideally, your filtration system should be located in a well-ventilated area, shielded from intense direct sunlight but easily accessible for maintenance. Provided your system is securely positioned and exposed to moderate temperatures, suitable locations include the shaded side of your home, garage or near an outdoor tap. Before we start drilling, we conduct a free on-site consultation to determine the ideal place on your property to install a filtration system.
Can my solar solution power my borehole?
Yes, it can. Harnessing the sun’s power to provide electricity to your home can be extended to include your borehole pump. It makes better financial sense to power your borehole with solar considering our PV systems have a life-cycle that can last for many years.
Do I need a water storage tank even though I have a borehole?
This is entirely up to you. Whether a storage tank is necessary will depend on your water usage and the availability of water from your borehole. Under normal circumstances, your borehole solution should be sufficient to provide an adequate water supply. However, during periods of high water consumption or if the available water cannot meet your needs, a storage tank may be a worthwhile addition. Note that although you may have a sustainable water source, when it comes to water security, access to more is always a benefit, especially considering the extent of the water scarcity in South Africa.
